Frequently Asked Questions & Problem Solving Tips
Scroll through this page for tips and solutions to the most common questions course participants ask regarding Google Classroom, Flipgrid, and Coursework. If you have a question that has not been addressed on this page, please email erica@rootedwi.org.
Accessing Google Classroom
My place of employment uses Google as its domain platform. (This means that you can login through gmail.com to access your work email, even if your email address does not end in gmail.com.) Can I use my school or organization email account to login and participate in the course?
No, sorry. Email addresses that use Google as the domain platform are not eligible for use in Google Classroom. You must use an email address that ends in @gmail.com.
I am having trouble joining Google Classroom. I received and entered the code, but I got the following error: “That code isn’t valid. Make sure that you typed the correct code.”
Check that you are logged into a Google account when you try to join. Even if you registered for the course with an email address that does not end in @gmail.com, you must use a Google email address to join Google Classroom. Google does not allow access to Google Classroom through outside domains. The email address you use to join and access any course through Google Classroom must end in @gmail.com.
I already joined the TNC Google Classroom, but now I am receiving an error message from Google saying that I do not have access to the classroom. What’s going on?
Make sure you are logged in with the Gmail account that you joined the class with. If you normally use a different Gmail account or if you normally access email via gmail.com, you may be automatically logged in using a different account. You can check which account you are logged in under and/or switch to a different account by clicking on the circle icon at the top right corner of the Google Classroom page.
Using Flipgrid
I recorded my Flipgrid video, but it has not yet appeared in the grid. Do I need to re-record my video?
Nope! You’re all set. Your course instructors review the videos submitted through Flipgrid before we make them available for everyone to watch. You will receive an email notification when your video has been approved and posted. Sometimes we receive a large number of video submissions in one day, so it might take a day or so for your video to be reviewed.
I am uncomfortable submitting a course assignment video through Flipgrid that shows my face. Is there another way to submit the video-based assignments?
Yes, absolutely! If you would prefer to record a video that does not show your face, please use one of the options in this guide.
Coursework & Assignments
I did the reading or video assignment but I still received an email telling me that the assignment is due. Can I stop receiving reminders for assignments I have already submitted?
There are two ways to fix this:
- When there is an assignment with a due date in Google Classroom, you can click the orange “Mark as done” or “Turn in” button when you have completed the assignment, which will prevent you from receiving a reminder. You can do this even if there is no work to attach or submit through Google Classroom. (Please note that for some assignments, such as journal entires, you will have to attach your assignment.) This video walks you through clicking this button to turn off notifications around the 3:15 minute mark.
- At the bottom of the assignment reminder emails, there is a button to unsubscribe from all Google Classroom notifications. You can select this to disable all emails notifications from Google Classroom. You will still receive emails from your course instructors, but you will not receive assignment reminders or notifications that new announcements are posted on the course stream.
I completed the assignment, but in Google Classroom I see that the assignment is marked as “missing”. What does this mean?
Although this course allows participants to work at your own pace, we provide due dates to help participants pace themselves and to give the course some structure. The inclusion of due dates results in a “missing” label if you do not mark your assignments as done as you complete them. To remove the “missing” label on an assignment, you need to click into the assignment and then, on the right hand side, click the “Mark as done” button. This will signal to Google Classroom that you have completed the assignment and the assignment will be marked as “Turned in”. This video walks through how to mark your assignment as done around the 3:15 minute mark.
When I select the “Mark as done” button, I get a notification informing me that I did not attach work. Do I need to attach any work?
Nope! This is an automatic prompt from Google Classroom that does not apply to many assignments for this course. If we did not specifically ask you to attach or submit work, there is no need to attach anything!
